Western North Carolina Mountains explode with fall colors | CITIZEN-TIMES.com | Asheville Citizen-Times

Leaf hunting and viewing will consume travelers, tourists and native North Carolinians alike over the next few weeks as colors in the high forests reach an exhilarating peak. It is anybody's guess where the leaves will change first or fall last but conventional wisdom says the higher the elevation, the later the color change. Here are 10 spectacular vistas to experience the remarkable hues of changing maple, ash, oak and more. Grab your tree identification book, binoculars and hiking gear for some serious trekking or take in the views through the car window; catch an attraction, meal or music along the way. We're starting at the highest elevations and working our way down.

Mountain Trip « Vinumnvittles's Blog

We took off with some friends last week to our beautiful little home in the mountains of North Carolina.  It is quite a drive, about 11 hours with food stops, but that’s what makes it fun!!   If you have never been to The Georgia Pig in Brunswick, Georgia put it on the list.  I have been making it a stop since 1969.  It is BBQ!!  When I showed a couple of our friends the pic of the building they thought I was joking.  It is literally an old wooden shack.  Don’t let that put you off,  they have been doing Q since about 1950  ..could be wrong about that but its close enough.   When you walk in you will see on your left a counter with a brick fire pit behind it.  Stacks of pork butt and ribs slowly smoke away.  There are rules at this place…never ever ask for fries!!!  Get a pork sandwich with slaw and baked beans.  They press the sandwiches like a pannini  and the pork is moist and luscious.  Another rule!!!  No pics!!   The story goes that as the guy was chopping up the pork someone popped off  a flash!!!  Good bye finger!!!  It is exit 29…..Dont miss it!!  Everyone loved it and of course we went outside and took some pics in front of the pig!!

Nice description about recent trip to Beech Mountain

Beech Mountain Bliss: Apple Hill Farm - Alpacas and Llamas and Donkeys! Oh my!

I thought I'd take a few moments to reminisce about our Summer vacation up on Beech Mountain this past July. We packed so many fun things into our visit last time that I'm still behind on blogging about them all. One really fun day was our visit to Apple Hill Farm - the Apple Hill Farm in Banner Elk, NC, that is.

One fine Saturday afternoon, we took a 20-minute drive off the Mountain to go visit . . . Alpacas! And Llamas, donkeys, chickens, goats, horses and . . . well, let's not forget the farm dogs and cats. They typically give tours (tickets cost about $10 for adults, and less for kids) on Saturdays Spring through early Fall. And the tour is extensive, lasting 1 1/2 hours (although, in our case, our group got along so well with our guide, our time stretched to closer to 2 hours).
