Freshman Showcase: “Nothing Serious” presented Nov. 4–7 » News Archive » Appalachian State University News

BOONE – Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents its annual Freshman Showcase Nov. 4 through 7 in I.G. Greer Studio Theatre. Performances begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students.  The box office is open Monday-Friday 2-5 p.m. and one hour prior to show time.  Patrons can purchase tickets in person, by phone at 828-262-3063, or online at www.theatre.appstate.edu/performances.

“Nothing Serious” includes five of playwright Rich Orloff’s most popular short comedies, including two affectionate dissections of theater itself:  “Playwriting 101” and “Oh My God, It’s Another Play!” Orloff’s quirky vignettes include such off-the-wall characters as penguins, babies, and God Herself, which are set in imaginative and hilarious worlds, from the Garden of Eden to Antarctica.  The show highlights original dance pieces choreographed by Appalachian faculty Marianne Adams, Susan Lutz and Rebecca Quin.

Winston Salem Journal - Community Milestones

Carl Clarke has been inducted into the Reich College of Education's Rhododendron Society at Appalachian State University. A native of Belmont, Clarke graduated from ASU in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in English and physical education. He received his master's degree in 1960 from UNC Greensboro, and in 1977 returned to Appalachian to earn his Ed.S. degree.

Clarke retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 1990, after 38 years in public education. In his honor, the school board named a new street for him at Glenn High School, and a football field at East Forsyth High School.

An avid actor and performer, Clarke played the lead of Jack Stuart in the early years of Boone's outdoor drama Horn in the West. He directed, in collaboration with the Charlotte Opera Association, the southern premiere of Amahl and the Night Visitors, and also directed the Kernersville Bicentennial production in 1971.

The Inside Stori: A DAY IN BOONE, NC

Frequently I refer to PTA.....the small fiber arts group I'm fortunate to belong to......

We all lead busy lives, so it's rare when everyone can gather (except one member who lives out of state) as we did this week in Boone, NC to visit the Turchin Center at Appalachian State University.

USC Upstate News - USC Upstate Professor of Art to Display Encaustic Works at Turchin Center

Spartanburg, S.C. - Jane Allen Nodine, professor of art at the University of South Carolina Upstate, will have 20 works from her body of work called the trace series included in the 225˚ F Encaustic Encounters, a national exhibition to be held at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. The show will run from November 6, 2009 through February 6, 2010.

25˚ F Encaustic Encounters is the first exhibition focused entirely on encaustic paintings to be featured in Turchin’s galleries. All fourteen artists, who hail from across the country, will display works that demonstrate the many different techniques of encaustic painting.

Nodine was selected for the exhibition by Turchin’s curators based on research she has been conducting in encaustic painting. After receiving the invitation to exhibit in 2008, Nodine spent much of the summer of 2009 producing over 30 works for consideration by the curatorial selection team. They chose 20 for the exhibit, ranging in size from 12 to 48 inches. Nodine is the only artist from South Carolina to be included in the exhibit.
